What is Lotus Notes?

Lotus Notes is a unique IBM software that is really in a class of its own. Because there is no other software quite like Lotus Notes, it can be a painstaking task to explain what exactly Lotus Notes is, and what it does. Here, however, I will take a stab at providing a brief but concise account of what Lotus Notes is, and a description of its features.

Lotus Notes is an IBM owned software application that includes the following features:

  • Email
  • Customizable calendars and schedules
  • Contact Address Books or Person
  • Webserver
  • Programing
  • Webserver
At this point you may be asking yourself, how Lotus Notes differs from competing software application suites such as Microsoft Office? Really, there are many answers to this question.  One of the primary features that sets Lotus Notes apart from similar applications, however, is the utilization of a single user-interface or front-end.  Unlike Microsoft Office, for example, which separates each element of functionality mentioned above into individual applications (Outlook, Front-Page, Access), Lotus Notes brings these pieces together on a single user front-end.  Though the majority of those using Lotus Notes use it primarily or only as an email system, Lotus Notes features encompass all of the components of functionality listed above, similar to the components of functionality included in the entire suite of Microsoft Office applications.

Lotus Notes’ email system is not the strongest feature included in the Lotus Notes Application Suite, it is by far the most well known.  The Lotus Notes email system contains variations of most or all of the same features included with other popular email systems, including personal and group or organization calendaring and scheduling, customizable welcome page, a Welcome Page Wizard and Help Wizards for connectivity and setup, bookmarking options, multiple user access options, advanced search options, Lotus Notes anti spam filters, a number of other popular features.
